The Stratosphere Tower (now branded the STRAT) opened in 1996 and is, at 1,149 feet, the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. The SkyPod observation level sits at 869 feet and houses three thrill rides: Big Shot (a 16-G launch up the spire), X-Scream (a teeter-totter that dangles you off the edge), and Insanity (a spinning arm that swings out beyond the tower). The SkyJump — a controlled-descent jump from a platform at 829 feet — is the country's tallest commercial jump, terminating at a landing pad 17 stories below the launch deck. Operators run all rides during daylight; the SkyJump is the only one with limited weather windows. The tower-top Top of the World restaurant rotates once every 80 minutes for a 360-degree dinner view. Strip-end location means a 15-minute walk from the SAHARA monorail station.
