About Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area

Sloan Canyon was designated a National Conservation Area by Congress in 2002, covering 48,438 acres in the McCullough Range south of Henderson. The headline feature is Petroglyph Canyon, where more than 300 rock-art panels and an estimated 1,700 individual petroglyphs span 2,000 years of indigenous use. The Petroglyph Canyon trail is a 4.4-mile round-trip hike from the trailhead at the end of Nawghaw Poa Road. The walk is unshaded, the surface is loose gravel, and the petroglyphs are unmarked — bring a printed BLM brochure or you'll walk past most of them. No entry fee. No facilities at the trailhead. Best done October through April; summer temperatures make this trail genuinely dangerous.
